English one of the most used language in the world. English is very and can be learnt very quickly. Many of us English in our daily life. Sometimes we some sentences in our mind that no one could even imagine of. But while speaking and writing, we often get and say something gibberish.

According to the latest surveys and research that an often human make more than 100 mistakes per day. You might be thinking that you are a pro in the English language, but you still make some mistake. The most common type of error in the English language is grammatical mistakes.

Today we are going to the most common grammar mistake in the English language.

They’re vs. Their vs. There

This mistake is the most common type of error. Many people, including myself, make this mistake very often. These 3 words pronounce almost the same, but all three of them have a different meaning.

“They’re” the short form or contraction for they are. “Their” means the items or thing belongs to a particular person or group. Lastly, “there” means to indicate a place.

Example

Their- their bike is green

There- the bike is parked over there

They’re- they’re ready to go

These examples will help you understand that “their” mostly refers to the property of an item while “there” is mentioned and indicating the position or the place of an object. Lastly, “they’re” is referring that several people are about or doing something.

Your vs You’re

“Your” and “you’re” are quite similar in pronunciation and in even spelling having the difference of apostrophe and of letter E.

“Your” means to be owning something or referring a person to something or person. “You’re” means that comparing or actually being something.

Example

Your name is Steve

You’re like a tiger.

“You’re” is short form or contraction for you are.

Its vs. It’s

This mistake is also widespread, and many professional writers make this mistake. “Its” means that something belonging to a person and “it’s” means that to define a property or feature of thing or person. It’s is the contraction it is.

Incomplete Comparisons

This kind of mistake is also prevalent but is somewhat accepted.

Example: Our toaster is safer, bigger, and faster

Can you find the mistake? The mistake that we don’t know what the toaster is comparing with. Are they company comparing with a chiller or heater or competitor’s toaster.

If you do this kind of mistake, the reader will lose interest and create a misconception. It impossible for the readers to easily compare.

Passive Voice

This kind of mistake is not intended as while writing most people write a sentence which follows the rules of passive voice. If the sentence has an object in it and basically a noun that receives the action, then you can be a victim of passive voice. Passive happen when the purpose of the sentence is at the beginning of a sentence instead of in the end. Passive voice type of mistake will make the writing sound weak and unclear.

In this example, the sentence correctly uses a subject, “the writer,” to actively describe the object.

Dangling Modifiers

Dangling modifiers sound like a mistake that can cost your life. The name creates a dramatic scene.

Dangling modifier is a term or phrase that tries to modify a sentence but is not clearly stated. A modifier clarifies, describe or give more detail about the concept.

Affect vs Effect

This is one the mistake that which due to the almost same pronunciation of 2 words. Most of the people will confuse them when they are writing.

“Effect” is used as a noun and “affect” is used as a verb. When we are talking about the change with use “effect”. If we are talking about the act of change, then we use “affect”. A slight shift in the letter can create a colossal deception for the reader.

Example

The documentary had a significant effect on me- effect

The documentary affected me significantly –affect.

Using “they” for brand and entity.

Mistakes of this kind are also common as many people don’t know that a business is not considered plural. Instead of “they” we have to “it” for business.

In English, we take anything brand or entity with “he”,” she” or “they” as it makes more sense to use but this kind of use genuinely wrong. We all have to start with “It” to clearly show a brand or an entity.

It will look a little strange while writing the text, but once you have completed the text, it will give you a lot of sense why use it.

Me vs I

The mistake is lesser done but still is done by people. Most people know the difference between the two.

“I” is used as the subject in the sentence but most people will use as an object which creates this mistake. If you need to write yourself in the sentence as an object, you will have to use “me”.

Example

When the cookies are baked,, can you send some of them to bill and I?  – Incorrect

When the cookies are baked, can you send some of them to bill and me? – Correct

Read the example you will understand what the main difference is.

i.e. vs e.g.

This kind of error is one of the most confusing. Both of these are short form as it used mostly in descriptive text. Many people use “i.e.” and “e.g.” when trying to explain a point. But they don’t know the dull form the words. “I.e.” is the short form that is while “e.g.” means for example or just example. You, i.e. and, e.g. wisely, it will make you a good writer or otherwise it can destroy your text.

Who vs. That

This one is really tricky. Both these words are used when you’re describing or telling about someone or something.

Example.

Steve is a writer who likes ice cream.

If you want to the pro tip of when to use ”who” and when to use “that” here the tip. You can use “who” when you are talking about a person or live creature. You use “that” will you are describing a thing. To clear the difference in both of these, you will need to practice a lot.

Lose vs Loose

This one is one the stupidest mistake many teacher encounters. Mostly the confusion is due to the similarity of spelling. The meaning of the “lose” and “loose” are very different.

“Lose” is a verb which means that if something is unable to find or failed something. While “loose” is adjective, which implies that not firmly attached, fastened or even held.

Semicolons

Semicolons are used to join two independent sentences that are related to each other. Many people just don’t use it as they don’t know when to use it. Use semicolon as a connector in the text. Use when you want to write 1-2 different but related sentence together.

These are the most common grammar mistake in the English language. There are still more, but it would make this text really really long and unreadable kind off.
